New Immigration Registration Policy Raises Concerns Among Advocacy Groups

Immigrant rights organizations are voicing concerns over the Trump administration's decision to implement a new registration policy for non-visa immigrants, which could be a precursor to deportation proceedings. This controversial move requires individuals who did not enter the United States with a valid visa to register with the federal government and carry proof of registration at all times, or risk facing criminal charges.

Minerva Mendoza, program coordinator at the Pan Valley Institute in Fresno, California, expressed grave concerns about the policy's impact on the local community. "I've been with the organization for 12 years, and I haven't seen it this bad," she said. "Some of the farm workers I know have limited their public outings. Many of them don't feel safe going grocery shopping."

The Pan Valley Institute has been actively working to support and educate the community during these challenging times. They have distributed door hangers informing people of their rights when dealing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, and recently organized a celebration for International Women's Day in Madera to bring community groups together.

Drawing Parallels to Historical Injustices

Estela Galvan, another program coordinator at the Pan Valley Institute, drew parallels between the current administration's policies and historical injustices against immigrant communities in the United States. "It's history repeating itself," she said. "If it wasn't the Chinese Exclusion Act or the Japanese internment camps, it's the same thing, unfortunately. This is the time we really need to get together, support each other, protect each other."

The Institute is planning a public forum later this spring where Japanese Americans will share their experiences with the government registry and internment camps during World War II, highlighting the grave consequences of such policies.
